However, there are two techniques for cultivating microgreens in your own home. Firstly, you can grow them with soil quickly. If you find it cumbersome, you can grow your microgreens soil-free. You can easily grow them using a hydroponics method.

Soil Based Method

The most common and popular method of growing plants is the soil method. With this technique, you need to collect some soil into a container or tray. Make sure that the tray or container has enough drainage holes. Before planting, immerse the seeds for at least 6-12 hours.

Later, to prepare the pot, you have to take a decent amount of soil and spread it evenly. Ensure that the pot has no empty spot on it. Then, spread the seeds all over the pot. Lastly, apply a thin layer of soil and put the pot into a lighter area of your home.

Hydroponics Method

Hydroponics is the best method for those who want to grow plants but take soil planting as a hassle. With this approach, you’ll cultivate your plants in water instead of soil. Now, hydroponics is an advanced technology and has gained much popularity.

For this method, you need two trays or containers. One should have many drainage holes, and the other should be fully sealed. Firstly, you need to spread a medium-thick layer of coco coir, peat moss, or any other growing medium on the pot with drainage holes. And put the tray over the other.

Further, spread the seeds evenly. You should neither miss any spots nor spill them in a place. Yet, it would help if you spread them densely, as mustard seeds are very tiny. Again, after applying the seeds, you need to place a skinny layer of your growing medium to cover the seeds. Then, mist the pot with a good amount of water.

Later, you must place a little heavy matter and leave it germinating. But you need to water the seedlings two times a day. After the seedlings sprout, remove the severe issue and upper tray. Keep the microgreens under light and water them once a day. Lastly, you can harvest them when they grow up to 1-3 inches long.

  • Light: Microgreens mainly love light areas. Even they grow highly under the sunlight. However, artificial lighting is also an option if providing sufficient sunlight proves challenging.
  • Water: Microgreens need a moist environment to grow well. Therefore, you need to water your seedlings daily. While germinating, the seedlings need water two times a day. But after they grow, you can water them once a day.
  • Scissors: You must use a sharp scissor or shear while harvesting the microgreens. Make sure that you are not taking any soil with the seedlings.

How To Grow Mustard Microgreens?

Given that Mustard microgreens are both highly sought-after and nutritious, numerous individuals are keen on cultivating them in their home gardens. Besides, it is elementary to produce. I also grow Mustard microgreens in my home garden. If you’re going to have a good harvest of the seedling, you may follow my steps:


Firstly, I soak my seeds before planting. However, some growers do not consider soaking the seeds. Yet I prefer to soak them for 6-12 hours. It helps the seeds to germinate and grow roots more easily.

Preparing the Pot

After soaking my seeds, I go to prepare my pots. I take three trays as my pot to grow microgreens. I use one tray that has drainage holes and another without any holes. Then, I placed a no-hole tray with holes under the tray.

Growing Medium

After preparing the pot, I add a thin layer of growing medium. I mainly add coco coir, peat moss, or hemp mats as a growing medium. It is uncomplicated to grow microgreens using the hydroponics method. Moreover, the technique helps to boost a high-nutrient and delicious bunch of Mustard microgreens.

Together, I grow my microgreens with soil, too.


After spreading a layer of growing medium, I lay the soaked seeds densely on the pot. I make sure that the pot is condensed with mustard seeds. Yet, I spread the seeds evenly over the growing medium. After sowing the seeds, I placed a thin layer of growing mediums to cover the seeds.


After finishing the process of sowing the seeds, I water the pot properly. Moreover, I use a water spray and sometimes a water pot to water them well.


Then, I place the other no-hole tray on the top of the seeds and put a medium weight on it. In this way, I leave the seeds to germinate and grow roots. I put the tray in a light area for 2-3 days. And I mist the roots and seeds adequately.


In 2-3 days, the roots start to grow. Then, I removed the upper tray and replaced the tray with another area. I water my seedlings once a day until the harvesting time appears.


All microgreens love sunlight. In fact, they grow well in medium sunlight. Therefore, I provide proper sunlight to my plants. If the light is insufficient, I put my plants under an artificial light.


I prefer to harvest my microgreens in 7-10 days. Mustard microgreens grow up to 1-3 inches tall in 7 days. Furthermore, I use a sharp knife or scissors to harvest the seedlings.

How to preserve

After harvesting, I wash my microgreens properly. I prefer to eat them raw. Again, I kept them in a plastic bag in the fridge. The sprouts stay fresh for ten days.
